This book should rather be titled “A communist sympathizers biased biography of the modern Greek nation”. I really couldn’t go into enough depth on how much the author skews history with his own biases. Constant insertion of opinion, skewing the narrative, delineating facts. You can barely say this book is worth reading. If you’re a Greek patriot, certainly don’t buy this book. If you’re interested in a book that does not skew facts, certainly don’t buy this book. The author fails to even mention the Pontian genocide. He instead speaks of some sort of a mere “population exchange” between Greeks and Turks during World War Two, and the atrocities that the Greeks committed on the Muslim populations within Greece during the time. I think that speaks volumes. This book is not for the casual reader. It seems like it’s written for serious history students. I had a personal interest in the subject so I got through it fine. Most areas of the Greek state are explored, but the Dodecanese and Rhodes are barely mentioned and not in any detail in regard to the Jewish population and life under Mussolini and then Hitler. Also missing is the more recent Chinese investment in Greece.
